Lake Murray SC fishing Report May 23,2009

Lake Murray SC fishing Report May 23,2009

  • Bream: Awesome. Look for fish in water as shallow as a few inches and down to about 3 feet, with most fish seeking out shallow water fro the spawn. For bluegill use crickets and for shellcracker fish sections of nightcrawlers or troll slowly throwing jigs for a mixed bag.
  • Striped Bass:Good. Striped bass are schooling around the dam, in the Ballentine area and around Beaver Creek. Free lines, down rods, and cut bait off points is also catching fish. Fish will also be targeting spawning blueback herring on points. Try drift fishing on the main river channels and off the main points. It is really getting good! Trolling is also offering some good catches.
  • Largemouth Bass:Good. The blueback herring spawn is starting on Lake Murray and Spooks or swimbaits fished off main lake spawning points will both work. Later in the day Carolina rigs thrown up on these same points are a very good choice.Mixed bags of Striped bass and largmouths are common at this time of year as they both are chasing the Blue Back Herring.
  • Crappie:Good. Best fishing is coming 8 feet deep over 12-15 feet of water near brushpiles. Dooley's reports that one customer caught a mess of crappie ¾ of which were still filled with eggs and so some fish must not have moved to the banks to spawn yet. This has been a hard season on Crappie fisherman. Just strange is the only way to put it. You are either on them or your not with no middle ground.
  • Catfish:Fair.  good numbers of catfish are being caught right now drifting cut herring across flats in 35 to 50 feet of water and some out of the backs of feeder creeks. Use cut baits and night crawlers.
  • Saluda River Trout. Good. Catches have picked up and the stripers are now starting to get to the top of the river. Striped bass. Good Smallmouth Bass: Good and getting better try jigs and lures in the rocks around shoals. Water flow has been high at times so check SCEG flows before going.

Through Saturday, May 30. Moonlight and Magnolias. It's February 1939. The filming of Gone With the Wind is stuck in neutral with a script going nowhere. Famed producer David O. Selznick fires director George Cukor, shuts down the production and brings in legendary film director Victor Fleming straight from the set of The Wizard of Oz, along with "script doctor" Ben Hecht, author of The Front Page. Selznick proceeds to lock them all in his office for five days, living off nothing but bananas and peanuts ("It's brain food!"), as they struggle to crank out new script material for Gone With the Wind and get the cameras rolling again. Unfortunately, Hecht has never read more than the first page of the book, and all he knows about the story is that it's set in the South, has slaves, and involves the Civil War. Since Hecht was not familiar with the characters, Selznick and Fleming acted out each scene. Visit Workshop Theatre for more information.
