To my gifted friends on Active Rain. This stumped me.
At first I thought it was another math thing.
I did this several times using different numbers in odds and evens.
If you can figure out how she does it please let me know.
I never even touched the cursor on my chosen number.
Once I did not even follow the directions,
I just looked at the number and she still got it!
This will drive you crazy!

Okay, that is creepy! How does it work???
That's prety cool. It got all 3 that I did in a row.
That is creepy and cool at the same time
I'll have to ask my genius son, I can't imagine
Ok....so I took 4 different 2 digit numbers and did the answers. I did 46, 71,14 and 96. Although the answers to each was different, when you look at the grid....they all said "Cuff Links". So my guess is there is only a specific amount of answers and they are all the same. I'm sure each time you do the game, the answers in the grid changes.
does this make sense? Great teaser though!
Ah, modular math tricks. There are a lot of them that can be created. Much like a slight of hand magician, the more complicated and distracting you can make the user experience the fancier the trick looks. This one has a real nice interface and the regifting thing is cute.
Could be a good marketing gimmick if you could incorporate it into your own products or services.
Heres a link to some modular math tricks.
I have no idea. Does anyone know how this works?
Laura, math is cool.
Here is the answer!
No matter what number you choose, your answer after subtraction will always be a multiple of 9.
for example:
20-2-0=18, 30-3-0=27, 40-4-0=36
21-2-1=18, 31-3-1=27, 41-4-1=36
22-2-2=18, 32-3-2=27, 42-4-2=36
So - 9,18,27,36,45,54,63,72,81or 90 will always be your answer after subtracting the two digits from the original number.
When you look at the grid you will see that all of those corresponding numbers have the exactly the same gift. This is how she knows what you have picked to regift. Since she already knows your answer will be a multiple of 9, she makes all those multiples the same gift.
Dan
Laura, sometimes we try so hard to "figure things out" Don't we. It is some kind of algorithm that some very clever person created. Pretty cool - thanks for sharing.
I agree with Bob, this is creepy. Even though its a math "trick". Math is creepy!!!
There are only a set number of answers and they all have the pen and pencil as an answer.
At first I didn't think it was working but I tried again and it was very accurate. Thanks for posting this now it's going to eat at me for the rest of the day.
I do not know. Great thing with have other advisors on board.
That is a hoot. And one to send along to friends just for the fun of it. Thanks to Dan for figuring out the "magic."
Laura--This is a puzzle for my Hubby. He loves mind games, especially ones that involve math. He does a Suduko every day.
Thanks for sharing. This is definitely one to send along to friends, as Susan states above!
Interesting indeed but we are being set up. There are only 9 possible answers regardless of what number we choose yet we are presented with 99 choices. Presenting all this extraneous information is called "obfuscation" and prevents us from noticing that each of the 9 possible answers all have the same "gift".
For example, take all the numbers 80 through 89 and do the math. Each one will equal 72. The numbers 40 through 49 all give 36. Very fun indeed, thanks so much for sharing this, I love it!
Aloha!
Oh well, That just goes to show I'm better off selling real estate!
It's madness I tell you. That lady and Chris Angell are both witches and that's all I have to say about that.
I don't like that at all. Something is wrong with the world when someone can mess with my mind like that -- LOL.
Laura --- I'm very impressed that Dan figured it out -- I certainly could not --
That's crazy! I love it. I could do that all day (if it was raining). I wonder if it's one of those math equations
